A brand new Channel 5 home makeover show headed for Nottinghamshire as interior designer Sophie Robinson took on a converted school house for the first episode.
However, it soon became clear that the homeowners wanted very different things from the space – his man-cave games room versus her stylish pad for girls’ gatherings.
With the design handed over to Sophie, along with £10k of their own money to contribute to the make-over, Sophie claimed “anyone can turn boring into beautiful”, adding she had been in thousands of homes and they all have the potential to be stylish.
Taking on the challenge to create a warm and inviting space for them both to enjoy, Sophie began by saying the plan was “maximum attack” and suggested painting all the walls and ceiling black.
Sophie explains that the couple had bought the 100-year-old school house as their dream home project five years ago.
She said: “The main challenge with big spaces is to make them warm and inviting.”
She added: “But where Kirstie wants sumptuous sofas and a grown up decadent dining space, Martin likes big boys toys. Fitting into the design needs to be a huge 85-inch tv and recliner chair and a full size snooker table.”
Nottingham-based window dressing specialists Hillarys were brought in to help with the soft furnishing.
Alongside all that black, dark wood floors, antique rugs and distressed mirrors were arranged while the huge three-metre sash windows were dressed in Harkness Gasoline curtains from the Abigail Ahern collection from the city company.
As the Retford couple’s room was vast, Sophie said everything had to be oversized from the light fittings to the sofa.
She said: “The first oversized fittings to go in are the curtains.”
As the drapes where hung she said: “Love the curtains.” And with a drop of 3m 20 inches, they were certainly a statement.
With work complete, Sophie revealed the finished room to homeowners Kirstie and Martin and they were delighted.
Martin said: “It’s brilliant. It is more than we could have expected.”
Kirstie added: “The room is amazing”.
And later she added that the curtains “bring such a luxurious warmth to the room and the quality is amazing”.
