Derby’s relationship problems create need for couples counsellors

Increased demand for help from couples, families and young people due to the pandemic has prompted a major recruitment drive for counsellors in Derby and the wider county.

Relate Derby and Southern Derbyshire needs counsellors who hold a qualification in couples counselling, as well as those who have experience supporting families and young people.

There is also a need for psychosexual therapists as well as counsellors holding a CYP qualification to help young people.

Chief executive Rachel Morris said: “The pandemic has increased pressure on people in relationships and individually.

“Consequently, we are facing high demand in all sectors of our work.

“We are looking for qualified counsellors to fulfil a variety of contracts – from 4 to 12 sessions per week, mainly evenings and some daytimes and weekends. Applications are invited from any geographical location.

“Currently, most counselling is taking place remotely and a combination of face-to-face and remote work is likely to continue for the foreseeable future.

“We help people of all ages, backgrounds, sexual orientations and gender identities and our team regularly receives testimonials from people who say we have played a part in helping them to find positive direction in their lives when they most needed it.”

The only exception to virtual counselling is in schools, which usually takes place on-site.

Ms Morris said: “Counsellors are supported by a dedicated appointments team who take calls and make appointments six days a week, and receive free high-quality one-to-one clinical supervision each month.

“They will also attend a range of tailored personal development courses run specifically for our counsellors and gain free access to a national practice helpline for emergency consultation on practice issues.

“We would be delighted to receive applications from anyone who fits the bill and wants to help at this critical time.”
