The highly-anticipated opening of a new department store at Derbion is set to take place next winter.
Work to develop the new Frasers store, spanning three floors of the Derby shopping centre, is expected to get under way this summer ahead of an opening which has now been pencilled in for the final few months of 2022.
The centre’s biggest unit was previously occupied by Debenhams for more than a decade, before it closed in May, last year, to the sadness of many shoppers.
But promisingly, less than four months after it shut its doors, Frasers Group, headquartered in Shirebrook, Derbyshire, signed a deal which will see Frasers open there.
The store will have 127,000 square feet of retail space, floor space enough for more than 40 tennis courts.
Inside, there will be a beauty hall and areas dedicated to stocking men’s, women’s and children’s fashion.
A Sports Direct store will also operate on one of the three floors, meaning Derbion’s existing Sports Direct outlet on Level 1 will close down when Frasers opens.
As part of the same deal, Flannels, which stocks designer brands such as Balenciaga, Burberry, and Dolce & Gabbana, opened on Level 2 of the centre in mid-December.
While earlier this week, it was announced that another Frasers Group brand, Jack Wills, is opening a new store at Derbion this spring.
Adam Tamsett, general manager at Derbion, said: “As part of the significant leasing deal announced last year with the Frasers Group, we have already welcomed FLANNELS into Derbion to great success in December.
“Work to transform the newly announced Jack Wills unit will also begin this month and is expected to open late spring.
“Development of Frasers is expected to begin this summer and we hope that it will be open this winter.”
In other Derbion news, several stores are offering ranges of romantic gifts with less than two weeks to go until Valentine’s Day, including jewellers Beaverbrook’s, Pandora and Goldsmiths, chocolatier Hotel Chocolat, and florist Enchanted Rose.
Long-standing Derby skateboarding and streetwear retailer Rollersnakes has extended trading at its pop-up shop until next Tuesday, February 8.
Spanish fashion brand Mango opened its new store on Level 2 in mid-November. It offers a range of women’s fashion and accessories, plus menswear, childrenswear and homeware.
SD Home of Menswear, stocking formal menswear from a wide range of well-known brands, also opened in November on Level 2.
