Grantham coffee shop described as an ‘oasis’ celebrates five years in business

A Lincolnshire cafe described as being “an oasis in the centre of town” has recently celebrated five years of business. Known for it’s delicious cakes and unique atmosphere, The Garden Yard in Grantham is a beloved business run by husband and wife duo, Tony and Sarah Gibson.

The pair initially set up the space on Union Street in May 2019 as a place to sell garden items as Tony works as a garden designer, but the business soon developed into a cafe as well. Sarah explained: “One day we had some people over and they said we should sell my cakes.

“We started with a small coffee machine and three cakes to choose from. We just started from there and it was just Tony and I at the beginning, I had one Saturday girl who started at 16 and now she works for me full time and we have up to ten people working on a Saturday.”

Sarah added: “The thing that our customers always say is that it is an oasis in the centre of town. We still get people coming in who have never been in before and have lived in Grantham their whole lives, they came in and said they didn’t know how big it is.

“I love working here, it’s a really lovely place and it’s great in the summer when all the birds are singing.” Located on Union Street, the business does a little bit of everything, from afternoon teas to unusual cake flavours, and this summer they will be hosting their first wedding.

She added: “It’s hard work as I’m the one who makes all of the cakes. It would be easier to buy them in from somewhere else but I think doing them ourselves is what people like. We’ve had all the same staff since the beginning and they might see a recipe somewhere they want to try and because my family is from Cyprus I make a lot of Greek cakes, I like to do some things to remind me of home, like Portokalopita, which is a greek orange syrup cake.

“I like cake and most of my staff like cake so we talk about it a lot, and a lot of our customers will ask when we are doing a particular cake, like our Guinness and chocolate cake.” Sarah explained she also makes homemade sausage rolls every weekend for Sasauge Roll Saturday which is really popular with customers.

The business is open six days a week throughout the year no matter the weather. When it’s chillier the team has blankets available for customers, and there is also a marquee up.

However, whilst the site is lovely during the summer Sarah added that it is also magical at Christmas as they host wreath-making workshops. As part of this, they have large firepits out for people to toast marshmallows and they serve festive drinks like hot chocolate and mulled wine.

Regarding her “loyal” customers, Sarah continued: “They are the ones that keep us going through the winter, they are the people that come almost every day. Summer is great and people like to go and sit out here but it’s the people that come throughout the year that keep us going.”
