Man exposes himself and tries to drive into people outside Retford pub

A man who exposed himself before getting into his car while drunk and trying to drive into people has been jailed.

Joseph Joyce, 23, caused chaos outside the White Lion pub in Retford on May 15 just after 12am.

Nottingham Crown Court was told that Joyce “used his vehicle as a weapon” as he attempted to drive into multiple people while over twice the limit for alcohol.

Before getting into his car, he exposed himself to one woman before punching another in the shoulder, the court was told.

Joyce then led police on a chase through Retford after they arrived at the scene, driving at twice the speed limit and on the wrong side of the road.

The court was told he only came to a stop due to the damage on his car’s tyres – Joyce then ran away from his vehicle, before being found hiding in a bush nearby.

He later blew a reading of 102mg per 100ml of blood.

Anna Soubry, mitigating, told the court: “He has been in trouble when he was 16 but, since then, this young man has turned his life around.

“He is deeply ashamed of what he has done.”

Sentencing Joyce, Judge Godsmark said: “It was extremely dangerous behaviour, using a vehicle effectively as a weapon while close to a pub, going on to drive in a way which endangered more people.

“You seem to have turned your life around and now appear be a hard working young man, which makes these events all the more tragic.”

He pleaded guilty to a number of offences including dangerous driving, affray, assault by beating, exposure, driving without a licence, driving without insurance, driving with false registration plates and failing to stop for police.

Joyce, of Mosedale Road in Middleton, Manchester, was sentenced to 12 months in prison, fined £100 and disqualified from driving for three years.
