Popular Nottingham dive bar ‘not allowed to use name’ as it’s forced into rebrand

A popular Nottingham dive bar has changed its name to ‘Percy Pickebackers’ after being forced to rebrand.

Formerly called Billy Bootleggers, the dive bar on Weekday Cross will now go by the new name and has already rebranded online.

The exact circumstances of the name change remain unclear but, the bar confirmed it will no longer be called Billy Bootleggers after being told the bar was ‘not allowed use those two words anymore.’

Percy Picklebackers have been approached for comment and the name change appears to have come into force sometime in August.

A statement released on the bar’s Facebook page on August 15 reads: “Strange news, after a long, drawn-out process, those pesky guys at the government office have decided that I am no longer allowed to call my little dive bar Billy Bootleggers.

“It’s a long story but basically I’m not allowed to use those two words anymore so it looks like it’s time for a rebrand.

“Don’t worry though, we won’t let ‘the man’ beat us and we’ll continue on with what we’re doing. We’re not changing anything other than the name. Well, apart from all the stuff we’re going to add to make the place even better.”

The bar then ran a competition where a £50 bar tab was on offer to the person who voted for a name and was selected at random.

A shortlist of names included:

  • Wonky Willy’s Dive Bar
  • Picklebacking Pete’s Dive Bar
  • Peter Picklebacker’s Dive Bar
  • Percy Picklebacker’s Dive bar
  • Polly Picklebacker’s Dive Bar
  • Micky Moonshiner’s Dive Bar

The bar opened in 2019 on Weekday Cross as a dive bar that usually stays open until as late as 2:30am.

It has now begun referring to itself and booking events as ‘Percy Picklebackers’ but has assured customers that this will not change what it offers the customers.
