Comic Relief viewers were blown away by Scarlett Moffatt as she joined fellow celebs to sing in an opera performance on live television during this evening’s Comic Relief. The Gogglebox star appeared alongside Rosie Jones, Helen George, Tamzin Outhwaite and Nina Wadia in the performance.
They had 24 hours to rehearse before performing a medley of three Aria’s from the opera Carmen at The London Coliseum this Red Nose Day. Scarlett burst into tears as she performed to the crowd.
Speaking before the live performance, Scarlett said: “Being asked to take part in the Comic Opera amongst the rest of these brilliant ladies is incredibly exciting. I am so scared but totally up for the challenge because I’ve long been a fan of Red Nose Day, and the work Comic Relief does is just so important, so I really hope this helps people to donate, donate, donate,” The Mirror reports.
Speaking after the performance to presenter Sara Cox, the 31-year-old said she used to watch Comic Relief as a child and to be part of the show is “amazing.” She added: “Every one is born knowing Comic Relief.”
Speaking on her Instagram account before the show, she told fans it was out of her comfort zone, adding: “I’m not a professional singer, I’ve never had a singing lesson before, never mind opera. “People train opera for like years, sometimes decades and we’re getting not even 24 hours, it’s crazy. I don’t regret signing up for it though, I think it’s going to be amazing.”
Viewers took to Twitter to share their admiration for the group, with one person saying: “They all did amazingly well singing opera And what an inspirational woman Rosie Jones is. I love her so much!”
Another said: “Well, those girls had some balls to sing opera! Helen George was particularly great.” One fan wrote: “That was incredible…24 hours to learn that!! They smashed it.” Another admiring viewer said: “Say what you like. These women are beautiful and have really good singing voices!”
A viewer said she was left in tears by the performance, writing: “Enormous congratulations to the comic opera 5 on #comicrelief. Fabulous effort by all of you. I’m in tears, and donating as I write.” A sixth person said: “That was a great Carmen performance from all five, but BLOODY HELL, #ScarlettMoffatt! Where did that come from?! Amazing!
A seventh TV fan, who tagged Scarlett in the post, said: “Absolutely amazing you should be so proud of yourself along with rest of the ladies.” This year’s Comic Relief produced many memorable moments, including a technical glitch near the start, a beautiful dance by Strictly Come Dancing Champions Rose Ayling-Ellis and Giovanni Pernice, and host David Tennant choking up as he said he felt ‘helpless’ amid the Ukraine crisis.
