The Notts home makeover Instagram stars share their tips and favourite places to shop

Whether you just want a furniture overhaul, to change the décor or you’re embarking on a big home renovation, let’s face it, we all love a bit of a property makeover.

And if Instagram is your go-to place for interiors inspiration, then Nottingham has some of the best interior and home makeover Instagrammers around.

While social media has its pros and cons, Instagram can be a great space for creatives to showcase their work, especially in the world of interiors.

There are lots of Nottingham-based accounts bursting with ideas and inspiration.

Here’s our pick of the best.

The Instagram Account:

@niceinnotts 14.6K followers

Who’s behind it:

Liz Moore, 45, lives in Woodthorpe with fiancé Rick who is founder and owner of Brik barbershops and their daughter Ava, 14.

Liz studied graphic design at Nottingham Trent University and went on to work in hospitality before later teaming up with Rick to help run their Nottingham barbershops. She’s now working as a social media manager while running her own successful Instagram accounts too.

About the account:

“It started in 2017, a few years after we bought a run down 1930s four bedroom semi,” says Liz

“The house needed so much work. We had to install central heating, windows and rewire plus add a new kitchen and bathroom. Someone said ‘if you like interiors you should be on Instagram’ and that was it.

“I started posting pictures of accessories and things that I bought for the house.

“Then I realised that people like to see whole rooms and were interested in my style, so I posted some before and afters of what I’d done to the house and it went from there.

“I really wish I had more before photos of the house now – it was absolutely awful and has been so transformed.

“I’d always loved interiors but never really knew how I could get into it. I loved the work I was doing in the the house so posting online was a great way for me to express that.

“I love being able to inspire other people and answer questions about. It’s such a lovely community and we all support each other. I just hope that because I love it so much, that comes through in what I do.

“To begin with, it was just a bit of a creative outlet and I liked the interaction with like-minded people.

“But I still can’t believe how my account has grown and that people are interested in my style. I’ve been described as an ‘eclectic maximalist’ which sounds about right!”

Instagram high: To be honest, I was delighted to get 100 followers. But it’s been amazing to be able to team up with so many incredible brands. It was also lovely to be featured in Home Style magazine too.

Favourite rooms: I really like our spare room/dressing room at the moment as I just love the Lust Home wall paper.

“I just walk in there and it makes me so happy. I also love the living room with its blue panelling as my dad helped so much with that room and that means a lot – a lot of blood, sweat and tears went into the renovation.”

DIY disaster: Not thinking properly about plug sockets! It’s only now that I realise that I put no thought into this, especially in the bedroom, so I don’t have sockets where I would like them now.

Top Tip: Don’t be afraid to completely ‘re dress’ a room. It’s a great way to refresh it. I like to move accessories around, rotate them here and there. I’ll clear everything out and then think ‘right, what do I want to put back in and how can I make the room look and feel different.’

@niceinnotts favourite places: Effy coffee shop on Houndsgate in town – the interiors are adorable, The Cod’s Scallops for the best fish and chips and I love Homesense, Sostrene Green and Oliver Bonas for interior pieces.

Who’s behind it:

Hilary Marconetto, 43, lives in West Bridgford with her husband Daniel and twins Ava and Alfie, 11 and daughter Florence, 7. Hilary now works full time as an interior designer with her own company.

“I never really knew what I wanted to do when I was younger.

“I worked in recruitment and later helped place students on interior architecture courses and always felt I was on the wrong side of things as I was quite creative really. I took a career break to have my kids and that’s when we started renovating the house.”

What’s the account about:

“I started posting photos of the house in 2018 and got really positive feedback.

“It just became a journey of us turning it into our family home. It’s a Victorian house and we’ve unearthed some lovely details such as a freestanding bath that had been covered for decades in tile.

“We added a side and ground floor back extension to create a bigger kitchen and extended the bathroom.

“We added a dormer and Velux’s to the top bedrooms and landing. We also added wooden sash windows to the front of the house.

“It took 6-9 months initially but a lot longer to fully finish the details and make it feel like a home, we had to do some of it in phases.”

Since embarking on the renovation of her family home Hilary has turned her creative talents into a career by completing a diploma at the National Design Academy and starting her own successful business Hilary Marconetto interiors.

While still posting images from her own life and home, followers will be inspired by shots which showcase her work for clients all over the country.

Instagram high: I’ve made so many wonderful connections through the Instagram community, been featured in Kitchens, Bedrooms and Bathrooms Magazine and invited to speak on expert panels.

Favourite rooms: I do really like the hallway but I like my living room best as it’s timeless and perfectly sums up my style. It’s the one room I never feel I need to change anything major in.

DIY disaster: I wish I’d have considered built in storage in my office. When it comes to clients the thought process is much more involved, but when it came to my own office I didn’t quite put enough time into thinking it out. I bought a beautiful vintage desk and thought the storage space in it would be OK but it turned out I could have used a bit more. I love my desk though.

Favourite places: I love The Atrium in Radcliffe-on-Trent for its food and interiors, Secret Garden Nottingham and La Storia West Bridgford for tasty Italian food.

Who’s behind the account?

Laura Emmerson, 37, lives with husband Jon, 48, in West Bridgford. They have children Ralph 10, Bella 9 and Polly, 7.

Laura says: “I’m a former commercial property surveyor and now, along with my husband, a residential property developer.

“I have always had a love for property and interiors, as a young teen I was a big fan of changing rooms and my bedroom got a wall mural, laminate floor and wood effect wardrobe makeover.”

What’s the account about?

I started my account in February 2020 as I wanted to engage more with the home and interiors community. Little did I know that it would become such a major interest with lockdown a few months later.

I love how friendly the community is and all the inspiration, whatever your style or taste there is something for everyone. It’s so nice to appreciate that we all like different things and the world would be very boring if we all liked the same thing.

Coming up on @thehappybuild I have some exciting plans for our snug and also will be sharing more of our other builds.

Favourite Rooms: My favourite room is most definitely the open plan kitchen and living space. The whole build was centred around it, with large sliding glass pocket doors which open up to create an inside-outside space.

Instagram high: Turning so many ‘virtual’ friendships into real ones and meeting up with fellow home accounts.

DIY disaster: I’ve learnt to always use tester paint pots after living with a pink bedroom which I hated from the onset – still not sure why I didn’t repaint it straight away!

@thehappybuild’s favourite places:

We love to travel and one of our favourite places is Barcelona particularly for the food, so we often dine out at Escabeche, West Bridgford. We have fond memories there too as it was where we held our wedding reception. I love the relaxed interior and the stand out green plant wall which we have replicated in our outside courtyard.

Who’s behind it?

Amy Dracott, 43, lives in Woodthorpe with husband Patrick. They have 12-year-old twin boys Quin and Noah. Amy says: “I have worked for E.ON UK for twenty years and am the Residential Coaching Lead. The job encompasses my passion for customer service and coaching. I have always loved decorating and making my home look nice, but the passion I have now has grown during the renovation of our house.”

What’s the account about?

“I began my account in November 2020, as a way to keep a track of the renovation progress.

“People seemed to like me sharing in the progress of the house, and I got excited that I could. I have always loved interior design and my little Instagram account has allowed me to share my style and taste.

“What people can expect from my account is seasonal decoration/ideas. We celebrate everything in our house and it is usually accompanied with decorations to match, much to my husband’s amusement.

“Right now we have lots of autumn items and pumpkins everywhere, but the excitement is building for Christmas.

“Also I like to share where I get things from. Not everything has to be expensive to look good, and it is often how you put things together and not the price tag that makes the difference.

DIY disaster? We have an old fashioned wooden front door I wanted to upcycle. I used water based paint over oil based gloss and the paint just peeled off and I wasn’t prepared for the mess it would make. We had to paint the door over and over again. We should have used a heat gun to strip it back and it caused us weeks of work.

Top Tip? When renovating, it gets worse before it gets better! Never underestimate the mess even the smallest of building work can create. Some days have brought tears due to exhaustion and frustration, but it is all worth it in the end. I think having patience and good friends who can feed you when you have no kitchen helps too.

@renovating_malmesbury_ ‘s favourite places: I am obsessed with Home Sense and TKMaxx as they have some beautiful home items, but I also love smaller shops as you get some really nice unique bits. I love Holliegraphik on Instagram for prints and Nine Schools sell beautiful ginger jars. Locally 2magpies in the Victoria centre have really different items. I often go to the Pudding Pantry with my son Noah at weekend. We love their breakfast choices and it is a nice treat for us to spend time one on one while his twin is playing football. Also Sneinton Market is growing and has some amazing stalls. My favourites are KJM Creations and Love at First Sight Vintage.

Annabelle Rogers, 40, lives on the edge of Nottinghamshire and Lincolnshire in a grade II listed Georgian cottage with husband David, sons Milo 10, Charlie 6 and step son Lewis, 16. Annabelle says: “I’m a senior designer and creative partner and I run our Nottingham based design agency with my husband. I graduated from Loughborough University with a first class honours in graphic design. I haven’t really had any social media experience before starting my account just over 2 years ago, I sort of ‘fell into’ the interiors community and loved it from the very start.”

What’s the account about?

“Mainly home and interiors with a little fun and lifestyle thrown in,” says Annabelle. “I started my account as I reduced my hours at work. With running a business, I never really had much time to spend at home, so the more I was here, the more I realised there was a lot that needed doing to the house. So I spent lots of time looking for inspiration, chatting to some lovely people and found the wonderful interiors community that I’m now part of. The other bonus that has come out of this is the charity work that we’ve been doing. My Instagram account has been a great platform to promote our charity work and we have received so much support. We are aiming to raise £10k by the end of November which will be going towards providing presents for kids in children’s homes.

Favourite rooms: “It’s got to be our outside patio/dip tank area. And also our lounge and utility room.”

DIY disaster? “It’s all well and good things looking nice, but it’s also got to be practical! I changed the lights over on our kitchen island and as beautiful as they look, it’s not bright enough in there anymore. I think I may have to get new lights.”

So many! I love Homesense and Ikea, you cant beat a good bargain. There’s a place in Newark called Vintage Chic and they have some wonderful furniture and home accessories. Also a place that was in Nottingham but it’s now moved to Derby I think, called Nash Interiors.

Who’s Behind it:

Helen Allsopp, 40 and husband Kevin, 43 live in Woodthorpe with their two children. They have now completed ten house renovations together. Helen says: “I first bought a house on my own at 19 in Netherfield. I did it up and sold it on after a year and a half and it’s just gone from there. I’ve always been creative and Kev’s pretty handy so there’s a lot we can do though we do use trades people too of course. We have lived in six of the 10 renovations we’ve done but this is our forever home.”

What’s the account about?

“We bought this 1940s three bedroom detached house in December 2019 just before Covid hit so that massively delayed us. This has been our biggest project yet and has been particularly hard, many times we’ve wanted to walk away but we’re getting there now. But we’ve done a wrap-around extension and have a huge master bedroom with dressing room and en-suite. We’ve changed so much, we might as well have knocked it down and started again. The budget has been blown, but a lot of that has been as a result of the pandemic.

“I was encouraged to start my Instagram journey by Liz from @niceinnotts and through sharing pics of the house and its journey I’ve become part of a lovely community. It’s been good for me to document how far we’ve come and the account is all about keeping the memories for me. I like helping others, giving advice and tips. On my account I mainly like to share finished photos rather than the progress though so the account shows images of the house as it comes together, to help inspire and for us to feel proud off after so much hard work.”

I like it when people message to ask how we achieved certain things or where products are from. I’m happy to help and share knowledge.

DIY disaster? Painting an entire bedroom matt black wasn’t the best.

Top tip? Choose your tradespeople carefully. This can be hard because even someone who has done great work previously can let you down so the key is to speak up straight away if you’re not happy with something. Even if this delays things further, in the long run it’s worth it. You want to get things right.

@theuglyduckling_project ‘s favourite places: I always say you can’t go wrong with Ikea and just because its affordable doesn’t mean it isn’t lovely. For what I like to call ‘forever furniture’ I do like Barker & Stonehouse.
