Two Lincolnshire chippies among top 40 best takeaways in the UK

Two Lincolnshire chippies have been named among the best in the UK and will go on to battle for the Takeaway of the Year title. Elite on the Bail, in Lincoln, and Linfords Traditional Fish and Chips, in Market Deeping, made the top 40 shortlist for the best takeaway at the National Fish & Chip Awards 2025.

The shortlist features chippies from all the way up in the Scottish Highlands right down to Cornwall, judged by a panel of fish and chip experts. Both the Lincolnshire entries receive rave reviews online.

One Elite on the Bail customer said: “Living in Lincoln, I have a good choice of chippies. This one isn’t the nearest to my home, but I always make the extra effort to get to the Elite on the Bail for the sheer quality. They’re not just the best in the neighbourhood, or the city, they’re the best in the region.”

A Linfords customer recently said: “I can honestly say that the food I have just eaten is the best fish and chips I have ever had.” Another simply wrote: “I go there every week so it must be good.”

The next round of the competition will see the official board of judges chopping the list down to 20 and then to the final ten. The awards ceremony will take place in London on February 26 at the Park Plaza Westminster Bridge, when the new winner will take the baton from current champion, Caerphilly-based Ship Deck.

Organised by the National Federation of Fish Friers (NFFF), the awards provide an opportunity for chippies across the UK to show the industry exactly what they are made of. The process involves a meticulous set of tasks, challenges and interviews covering industry awareness, product knowledge, environmental and sustainability best practice, employer responsibilities and customer service.

A spokesperson for Elite on the Bail said: “We are incredibly proud to reached this stage and we are incredibly proud of our team for their continuous hard work and dedication. Fingers crossed for the next stage.”

A spokesperson for Linfords said: “This recognition means the world to us, and it’s all thanks to you — our amazing customers and our dedicated team who work hard every day to deliver the best fish and chips in town. As we move forward in the competition, we’re even more committed to serving up our quality, sustainably sourced fish and chips with the same passion and care.”

President of the NFFF, Andrew Crook, says the category has seen many fantastic submissions. He said: “Fish and chips is such an iconic British staple and it takes huge amounts of skill and hard work to not only perfect the dish and other menu offerings but to also overcome challenges and sustain the business while keeping employees motivated and fulfilled.

“There’s a lot to it and each awards season we see greater depths of talent, expertise and business acumen and this trend has continued this year, too. Takeaway of the Year is the big one, so it goes without saying that the journey it takes contenders on is very intense.

“At each stage learnings and recommendations are provided to encourage the hopefuls to keep pushing forward and that’s why the National Fish & Chip Awards is seen as the competition for chip shop owners that want the additional steer to become better than they were before. We’re off to a brilliant start and we’re excited for the next rounds and to honour these deserving people.”
