Grantham railway bridge already crashed into 14 times this year

For years, a railway bridge in Grantham has been regularly hit by lorries and locals are no longer surprised when this happens. The bridge on Harlaxton Road is one of Britain’s most struck railway bridges, with the most recent incident occurring on Wednesday, November 13.

Whenever the bridge is hit it causes traffic issues on the road but it also disrupts trains on the Liverpool / Nottingham / Norwich and Nottingham / Skegness routes. Network Rail has confirmed that the bridge has been struck 14 times so far in 2024 as of Monday, November 18.

At the bridge itself there are a number of signs warning motorists about the height of the arched bridge, as well as signs urging high vehicles to use the middle of the road, but it is still often hit. Network Rail previously shared that between April 1, 2021 and March 31, 2022, the bridge in Grantham was struck 17 times, which made it the third most bashed in Britain for that 12-month period.

During this time the Lincolnshire bridge being struck also caused over 11 hours of delays for passengers, costing the rail industry and taxpayers more then £85,000.
