Heartbroken family of six lose three pets as house fire breaks out while they slept

A family of six were left devastated after they lost three pets in a house fire caused by an e-scooter. Cassie Loughton-Howe, her husband Jack and their four children were asleep at their home in North Scarle when a fire broke out in the porch in the early hours of Sunday, October 27.

Cassie said: “We heard a really loud bang that woke us both up so we jumped out of bed in a bit of a daze. I went to the top of the stairs and saw a fire in the porch with thick black smoke coming up the stairs. I thought we were going to die. We were breathing in this thick hot smoke that was burning our lungs and our throat.”

They woke all the children up, aged 14, 9, 8 and 6, and Jack helped everyone to escape onto the porch roof and down onto wheelie bins. After trying to contain the fire with the help of some neighbours, firefighters came soon after – but sadly they were unable to save their two-year-old dog Loki, a bird named Jackson and a pet frog.

Cassie says that despite the children needing some treatment in hospital, they were lucky to have all come out of it well. The fire was caused by an e-scooter which Cassie says was bought from a website that doesn’t exist anymore and it hadn’t been used for over a week.

The local community has pulled together to offer donations to the family and they have been offered a caravan in Swinderby to stay in temporarily. Unfortunately, the couple’s house insurance failed to automatically renew and a fundraiser has been set up to support the family financially.

Cassie and Jack are now cleaning out the house and hoping to get the family settled in the caravan. Despite losing some pictures and toys, most of their belongings were retrievable with some smoke damage.

Cassie said: “We’ve been donated so much stuff, it’s unbelievable how kind people have been. Anything you can think of, people have donated. It’s incredible. People have been so generous.”
