Skegness was taken over by Wild West shootings and authentic camps this weekend as the Turkey Creek Renegades strolled into town. The group, part of the British Westerner’s Association, pitched up their 1800s-style tents at The Village Church Farm Museum on Friday, June 28, ready for a weekend of Western fun.
This was the ninth event held at the site by the Turkey Creek Renegades, which is a group of friends that enjoy re-enacting the Western scene. The regular events help raise much-needed funds for the museum, with an impressive £940 being raised at this most recent event.
Over Friday and Saturday, more than 100 visitors called in at the museum to have a look at the camps and watch the re-enactments, which included a major shoot-out on Saturday, June 29. Members of the public were encouraged to get involved, and the event was even attended by the Skegness Town Mayor, Councillor Adrian Findley.
Mayor Findley helped judge some of the fast-draw games before having a go himself which he described as “good fun.” He said: “We come every year so we knew what was going to happen and that’s why we keep coming back, as it’s a fantastic day, it really is.”
During the event, many members of the western group camp out at the site in their authentic camps, and wear clothes that would have been worn in the 1800s and cook food on a campfire. The organiser of the Turkey Creek Renegades, Karl Crawford, said: “The Western camp out at the museum brings in members of the Turkey Creek Renegades from as far away as Blackpool, Preston, Leicestershire and Peterborough, as well as more local members.
“We are a close-knit group of friends who enjoy living and re-enacting the Western scene and are also avid supporters of The Village Museum. “Our camp out is a fantastic way for us to enjoy our hobby and raise substantial funds for the museum at the same time.”
He continued: “This will be our 9th Western camp at The Village Museum and it’s always a pleasure to engage with and entertain the public visitors. It also raises awareness of our hobby and helps to promote the wider British Westerners Association.
“I’d like to say a huge thank you to all the Turkey Creek Westerners for all the dedication and support they provide, as well as a huge thank you to the museum visitors who we hope you have enjoyed your trip back in time to the Wild West. We look forward to seeing you all next year for our 10th camp out at The Village Museum.”
A post on the Village Church Farm Skegness Facebook page also praised the event. It stated: “What a fantastic day it has been with Turkey Creek! We hope everyone enjoyed themselves and thank you all for joining in!”
